Why we exist

Built on honesty, because solar needed it.

The residential solar industry has a trust problem. Inflated savings estimates, pushy door knocks, contracts designed to confuse. We started Northern Lights because Virginia and Maryland homeowners deserve a straight answer: here are the four ways to go solar, here is which one fits your home and your taxes, and here is whether it actually saves money on your next bill. No upsell to one path, no pressure to sign today.

We would rather lose the sale than oversell the savings.

Every quote we build starts from your actual utility bills, your actual roof, and your actual usage patterns. If the numbers do not work, we tell you. If they do, we put it in writing. No inflated projections, no fine-print surprises, no pressure to sign today.

We do not push a single product. Some homeowners want to own their system outright. Some want to finance. Some want zero money down under a Third Party Ownership agreement. We walk you through all four, then recommend what actually fits your home, your tax situation, and your timeline.

Honest math, every time

We model savings against your real utility bill and your real roof, not a best-case template.

No pressure, ever

Our reps are salaried, not commissioned. You will not be pushed, pitched, or called back relentlessly.

Your home, your terms

Month-to-month cancellation in year one if you are not seeing savings. That is the whole promise.

Four paths to solar

Pick the one that fits your home, your taxes, your timeline.

Northern Lights is not a one-product company. We help you compare all four financing paths and recommend the one that actually makes sense for your situation. Here they are, in plain English.

Option 01

Cash purchase

You pay the full system cost upfront and own it outright. You keep every benefit of ownership, including any incentives currently available for your state and situation.

Best fit: cash on hand, long horizon in the home, preference for owning the hardware.
Option 02

Solar Loan

You finance the purchase, own the system from day one, and pay the lender monthly instead of the utility. We have financing options and we will walk you through them so you can pick the one that fits your situation. You also get the same local incentives available with a cash purchase, and we help you claim them.

Best fit: no cash upfront, solid credit, want the benefits of ownership.
Option 03

Third Party Ownership

A TPO agreement means a provider owns the hardware. Zero money down, a rate lower than your utility, and the provider handles maintenance, monitoring, and the production guarantee. Transfers cleanly when you sell.

Best fit: homeowners who want savings with zero down and no ownership responsibilities.
Not sure which is right for you? The Solar Reality Check is free and lays out every path side-by-side, with your real utility rate plugged in.

What you get

Six reasons homeowners trust us.

No gimmicks, no teaser rates, no promises we cannot back in writing. Every benefit below is baked into the agreement, not a marketing line.

01

Month-one savings

Your first post-install bill is lower than what your utility was charging, or we do not move forward with the install. Full stop.

02

Zero money down

No upfront cost, no installation fee, no deposit. You do not pay for panels, inverters, permitting, or labor. Ever.

03

Three paths, one honest fit

Cash, solar Loan, or Third Party Ownership. We show you every option and recommend the one that fits your home, taxes, and timeline.

04

Performance guarantee

If the system produces less than promised, we make up the difference. In writing, on every agreement we sign.

05

Transferable on sale

Moving? TPO agreements transfer cleanly to the next owner, and owned systems add to your home value. No hassle either way.

06

Rate protection

Your rate is locked at a rate lower than your utility, so as regional electricity prices climb, your bill does not climb with them.

How it works

Four steps, and only you get to say go.

Every step is non-binding until the very last one. If the math does not work for your home, we tell you and part ways without a pitch.

STEP 01

Share your bill

Upload a recent utility bill. Takes a minute. We use it to model what solar would actually cost and save.

STEP 02

Get your Reality Check

We send a plain-English breakdown: what you pay now, what you would pay with us, and whether it actually makes sense.

STEP 03

We design and install

If you want to move forward, our team handles design, permitting, and installation. You do not sign the final agreement until we flip it on.

STEP 04

Savings start

Your first post-install bill is lower than what the utility was charging, or we unwind the agreement at no cost to you.

From real homeowners

What our neighbors say.

Real reviews from homeowners in Virginia and Maryland. We do not pay for placements and we do not filter the rough ones, because the honest ones speak for themselves.

Brandon was upfront from day one. He told us the months our production would dip and what to expect on the winter bills. A lot of the other companies just showed us a single big savings number. We finally felt like we were talking to someone who wasn't trying to sell us something.

I had three quotes and theirs was the only one that didn't promise me $0 bills forever. Sounds weird but that's what made me sign. A year later the production has actually been a little above what they projected.

Chad caught a shading issue on our southwest gable that the previous company we talked to completely missed. He suggested we wait until we trimmed the oak in the back yard. Reset our expectations and the install went perfect.

Honestly the smoothest home project we've ever done. The install crew was here exactly when they said, cleaned up after themselves, and the final inspection was painless. Bills are now between $11 and $24 a month depending on the season.

Was very skeptical going in. Had a neighbor get burned by another solar company a few years back so I had a list of questions a mile long. They answered every single one and never made me feel like I was being annoying. Three years in, no regrets at all.

Tim never pressured us once. Took two months for us to actually pull the trigger and he checked in maybe three times in that whole stretch, always with new info, never pushy. That alone was a refreshing change.

James was our project manager and he kept us in the loop the entire way. Texted updates the day before each step, even on permitting which I know is a slog. Felt like having a friend in the business.

Solar made sense for us on paper but the part I was worried about was the install itself. Our roof is steep and complicated. Crew showed up at 7:30, were done by 4. Very professional. No leaks, no issues, no surprises on the bill.

Vinny answered a text from me at 9pm on a Sunday when I freaked out about the meter swap timing. He didn't have to. Kind of tells you everything you need to know.

Got pitched by the door knockers from one of the big national outfits and the numbers felt slimy. Found these guys through a neighbor who already had panels. Totally different experience. Wish I had called them first.
DW
Diana W.Baltimore County, MD
Reed walked us through three different ownership options without trying to push us toward whichever one was best for the company. We ended up choosing differently than we expected. Two years later the math is exactly what he said.

Bought our first home last year and the previous owners had panels installed through someone else. Production was off and we couldn't figure out why. These folks came out, did a free diagnostic, and found a bad optimizer. Didn't even charge for the visit even though we hadn't bought from them.

Solar Reality Check

The questions we hear most often.

If you have one we did not answer here, email us. We respond personally, not through a bot, and usually within a business day.

Ask us anything
Is this actually free to start?
Yes. There is no cost for the Solar Reality Check, no cost for design and permitting, and no cost for installation. You pay only for the power you use, at a rate lower than your utility. If we cannot beat your utility, we do not install.
What if I already tried to go solar and it did not pencil out?
Happens all the time. Other companies inflate projections to make the numbers look good. We build ours the opposite way, conservative. Send us your old quote and we will tell you honestly whether your home is a fit now.
Who owns the panels?
It depends on the option you pick. With a cash purchase or a solar Loan you own the system. Under a Third Party Ownership arrangement a provider owns the hardware and handles monitoring, repair, and warranty. We walk you through every path before you decide.
What happens if I sell my house?
The agreement transfers cleanly to the next owner. Most buyers are happy to inherit lower power bills. We handle the paperwork, and if the buyer does not want it, we have a removal path too.
Are you in Virginia or Maryland?
Both. We serve homeowners across Virginia and Maryland, with the same three core paths available: cash purchase, solar Loan, or Third Party Ownership. The specifics of the TPO agreement differ by state, and we walk through which one applies to you during your Reality Check.
What about snow, storms, or a bad production month?
Our performance guarantee covers it. If your system under-produces over a measured period, we make up the difference in credit. It is in the agreement and we honor it without you having to push for it.
